As you may have noticed, the paid subscriptions CB plugin got delayed quite a bit. Numerous reasons have delayed its release, and we hope to have cured most of them. The plugin is now running on a few websites in production, and lots of usability concerns have been cured.
We have completed implementation of PayPal payment subscriptions (automated recurring billings), as well as of Authorize.net AIM and ARB.
Soon, a first group of a few testers, selected among the persons having expressed interest, will be selected for beta 1 tests. Main selection criteria will be their presence helping in the forum on this site, allowing us to put more time into development, and their level of knowledge in CB. Then beta 2 tests will be started on a larger base, before we go RC and final on a commercial base.
One final word about this plugin and CB: For us here, it is "business as usual". JoomlaPolis and CB have been preserved from the joomla debates, and we have taken quite some time to make sure that this place will stay an island of freedom and peace. CB will continue to run fine on Joomla and Mambo for the forseable future, allowing a peace of mind. CB team's interpretation of the GPL licence hasn't changed since its begin, and is not going to change. We have taken quite some time in the last months to do our own due diligence on that subject, to make that sure.
I'm not giving dates on purpose, as we sincerely don't know the time the test-phases will take, and got our estimates wrong each time on this quite larger than expected application, with quite more flexibility than anticipated.
We will post as soon as we got more news. Thanks for your ongoing support and understanding.

another price model Written by msquared70 on 2009-03-04 21:06:13 What if you charged based on # of subscribers. For example, charge $25 for the Plugin but limit the # of subscribers to 250. Then if a site is more successful the site owner can purchase user packs in different denominations. e.g. $25 for each 250 more subscribers. Say the upfront cost of the plugin would be $200. Once a site admin has purchased user packs equal to the upfront cost then the plugin allows unlimited subscription and no more user packs are required. That way you have a low start up cost and can pay-as-you-go without the hassle of a per user charge. This gives the developers a fair price and allows a site to budget its costs as it grows. |

Updates? Written by revjb on 2009-03-02 23:14:51 Any update on the availability? I would love if this was released soon. |
Apology Written by koza on 2009-02-14 18:05:30 I think that I owe you guys an apology for making an assumption that you try to get greedy by providing the CB subscription plugin for a percentage of sales of their users. As some have mentioned in the past, it is not very clear to all what schemes will be available-I’m still not sure what they will be like. It seems, most like the flat fee idea-10 cents per transaction, because they do not what to pay a high fee upfront, without really knowing how they are going to do. Now imagine one who has about a 1000 subscribers who pay their small subscription weekly; that would mean one will have to pay you about 400 Euros per month. The question is: will one be willing to do that? In such case it would make more sense to pay one time flat fee for the plugin, whatever that would be, and forget about paying the flat 10 cents per transaction fee. You could try to accommodate most depending on their circumstances. This is just a thought. I hope it is obvious to all-it is to me-that you guys provide what it seems to be great software and need to be awarded for it. I do not think anyone expect you to work for free. I don’t. However, make sure that you do not portray yourselves in such a way that people will resent you for it. I did at first. Sorry. Suggestion: make it very clear to all what schemes will be available and let them choose one or a combination of more than one, if possible. In my case for example, I would not mind going for one-time-fee, if it were reasonable, or the 10 cents per transaction at first and, if my site grows to the point where it would make sense to buy it out, pay the remainder of the balance or something. I hope I have made myself clear enough. If not, please let me know. Greg |
Simple scheme Written by MikeFrank on 2009-02-13 01:39:07 While I do not agree with posts that are callng you guys greedy, I do agree that a simpler, one-time fee to purchase the subscriptions plugin is the best way to go. I would much rather pay the fee upfront than have to deal with a per-sale scheme, which would be a nightmare to administer on both sides..I'm glad that it is coming out soon, all that I ask is please hurry! |
Only a small percentage don't understand Written by eminer on 2009-02-11 15:02:46 Beat I think only a small percentage of members of your site don't understand what you are offering. Stick to what you had in mind. A small fee per sale is much better for most people who can not afford a large layout to get started. You are on the right track by offering several methods. |
Written by beat on 2009-02-11 13:48:19 It is saddening to us that the proposed method to make the pricing affordable for everybody has been taken as us being "greedy-for". As most comments show that our initial intent has been understood exactly the opposite way of our intentions (which were to make it affordable for every situation), the proposed pricing will be withdrawn and replaced by a simpler to understand and more classical scheme which is being currently finalized. To be very clear: Our "proposed pricing" is only an initially proposed pricing, and we are finalizing a different pricing scheme, in reply to all comments and suggestions received. Thanks for your comments and suggestions. More in soon to be sent paid subs Newsletter #2. |
Do not let the dark side of greed to ove Written by koza on 2009-02-10 15:20:46 If I had known that you plan to get greedy-for lack of better word-I would have never bothered looking into the paid CB subscription plugin.. It will never work because nobody in the right frame of mind will go for it. There is too much free or paid (one time only) software that work well and you can't beat that with your greedy scheme. Prediction; you will have to change your scheme to one-time-paid subscription before it is too late and people spread the news that you have become greedy. When that happens people will punish you for that and will use other software just for spite. I have seen that happen to many companies like Lexmark, Nortel, Yahoo, Mircosoft. |
How is this plugin better than AEC? Written by Clicktostart on 2009-01-28 22:49:48 I have been investigating various joomla plugins and creating a mindmap to show what components, modules and plugins work with each other and with each version of Joomla - what a mess! AEC seems to be a positive solution for subscriptions and is free... works in 1.0 and 1.5 legacy. sooo what does this plugin do that AEC doesn't? |
Nooby Question Written by rhocke on 2009-01-28 21:09:13 Having trouble figuring out whether the CB subscription plugin is awailable? If so exactly how and where do I get it? If not, when ever it becomes available - where can I get it? Also, thanks for the unbelievable set of products you have delivered. |
Written by beat on 2009-01-16 00:13:50 egenes, I hear and understand fully your call too for a different, simple version for simple requirements at simple small pricing. We might have something for that requirement too. |
Written by beat on 2009-01-16 00:07:06 trlbrdr, Sorry you didn't read the newsletter completely. This is one of the proposed licensing scheme ! There will also be other licensing schemes available at fixed upfront cost. The proposed licensing scheme was to make the upfront cost more affordable and well known. Costs are well known in advance and non-relevant compared to any other cost of runing an e-commerce. CB is free, will stay free and is open source. Paid subsscription plugin is a separate plugin, no need to get afraid of CB itself As you say, people only buy what they know they can afford. What's better than paying depending on the success which allows to afford ? I'm really sorry and very sad that our good intentions are understood the other way around. As said, there will be other licensing scheme to choose from, for those who don't want to let us make upfront cost smaller this way. No issues here :) Back to finishing all of this up. |
Pay-per-transaction=KILL Written by trlbldr on 2009-01-15 05:29:51 I have a client who is moving from free content to paid subscriptions. I've been waiting, along with all others, for the CB subscription component. Now, however, I cannot use it. My client won't buy into paying per transaction, and I will not absorb the cost for him. Instead, I'll simply set up a link to use PayPal's free subscription service on their server. Sorry, but I can't see any client buying into a proposition where the costs are unknown. Those who subscribe to an online magazine don't "pay-per-visit." They wouldn't subscribe if they didn't have a known fee. I really like CB, but I'll pull it from the site before I expose my client, or any other, to such risk. I understand that your team has expended a huge effort toward this (still delayed) component. But, people only buy what they know they can afford. Cheers. |
Status Written by Icarii on 2009-01-08 21:09:43 I've only been waiting 2 months for this and I'm already pulling my hair out. I'd really like a set date for release. In regards to the pay and you grow pricing structure I completely disagree and it may even stop me from using the product at all. As a web-developer I can't tell my clients 'it's going to cost you this much upfront for your website and then more fee's the more it chugs along' The software should be available at a one-time price. |
alternatives Written by juicyfruit on 2009-01-07 07:24:19 I guess if people have waited 18 months for this product, it's not that critical to the success of their website. Then again, people don't work for free. So a fair balance needs to exist. cheers Ed |
Just a site subscription component pleas Written by egenes on 2009-01-07 04:27:08 well i have to say that this component has grown up to be a goliath from the original concept. I simply wanted and have been patiently waiting for (Prolly close on 18-24 months) a neat, site subscription service for folks to buy a single, annual site subscription... now we have per-transaction-fees, postponed release dates... I think you should consider some different versions of this component - some with simple features and single purchase payment, and then a mothership version! otherwise you will be losing alot of possible revenue - i'm happy to pay $100 US for a simple site subscription component - no bells or whistles - integrated with CB. Please don't make me look at building this myself :( |
Per transaction? Not a chance! Written by mlewis on 2009-01-05 06:12:44 My god, yet another company that thinks it can get in bed with me and my hard earned business. Set a fee folks, don't get involved in this type of nonsense. Make it reasonable or it won't be long before you have competitors. Heck, in fact, set it high, then we will end up with competitors and wonderful options, it's always only a matter of time when you've priced yourself so high that you create the market against yourself. |
More on pay-as-you-go Written by jnprod on 2009-01-03 12:31:07 My main computer is dead, so I'm using a not as fully functional backup pc. So I couldn't see the video. I did look at the slides. In this "pay-as-you-go" scheme, what's the likely charge going to be, and how would it be billed/paid? Is it a simple %/transaction or a straight fee per transaction. I see some issues with either. If you get a donation of $1, a straight fee could be the majority of the $1 and as a percentage, you may not get much. I agree this is an extreme, but needs to be considered. Also, another issue with pay-as-you-go is the currency of each country. I'm based in Australia. We currently have a dollar that is about 60% of the US dollar. And definitely no where close to the Pound. As an example. I can see where you are coming from in trying to be fair, and can appreciate that. But fair is hard in a global economy. I'm not diametrically opposed to the idea, but would like a better idea of you you see this working. |
Written by beat on 2009-01-03 00:28:44 We are listening to your comments, and are sad to hear some disapointment in the latest ones. We have designed the pay-as-you-grow model to be as fair as possible for everybody, taking a share of your risk and success fairly. An upfront price at market level would be even more unfair to the smaller businesses. The investment into this plugin has been huge, and the features are quite huge as well. It integrates many functions that would cost several times its proposed price if bought separately and with less functionality and less integration. 20 or 50$ are not realistic and way out of the market prices for such a complete subscriptions+ACL+marketing+sales tool. If you are serious about E-commerce and business, the proposed price shouldn't be an issue at all. If it is, then you didn't consider other, way bigger, costs yet, and/or your business model has a problem. Some fresh news showing that we are listening:
- Other components will also have integration plugins from day one (e.g. Remository, any other wishes ?).
- We will be providing other licensing models in addition to the original pay-as-you-grow model.
With that we hope that main concerns are answered for now, at least until we release it (soon). |
Disadvantages for small users! Written by tyrex75 on 2009-01-02 10:25:36 All of us agree that the Paid subscriptions CB plugin should have a cost. But only partly I agree with the pricing and I think that the entry fee is too high and I do not think just the cost per transaction is independent of the price of the goods, which disadvantage small users, that most of the community. Thenm, why you have seen for development some components and not others? For example, Docman, and Remository....? |
Terrible Idea Written by chelby on 2009-01-01 06:43:13 NO CHARGE PER TRANSACTION. First CB team goes to a "Documentation model" which I pay for as I use the product a lot and don't mind helping out. Now, going to a per transaction charge on this highly anticipated plugin is a HUGE disappointment. You kept us waiting for years, and this is what we get. I was even on board with a one time fee of $20-50 US for each license. It seems the CB team has gotten a little greedy, and if it's not the team driving this, then they should stop supporting it by posting it on the main page and sending out emails about. This has me and several others I know VERY hot. BTW, there are other payment solutions that are not pay per transaction. PLEASE do not go this route! |
Bummed that this is a pay per transactio Written by cavyspirit on 2008-12-30 22:35:37 I've been waiting for this add-on forever. Now, in watching the video, I'm highly bummed that the payment model is pay per transaction. Please reconsider, as now I have to reconsider this add-on and whole approach. I just don't want to go down this road. Please pick a price and just charge us. |

will this be released before im dead ? Written by john1000 on 2008-06-10 22:59:15 jeez....how long do we have to wait for its release ? I feel stupid suggesting this subscription plugin to a friend. I offered him 2 choices....this plugin or AEC. If this continues he will deffinately go for AEC,or i will advice him that. He's waiting and waiting and waiting for any good news from me... Personally i dont use CB anymore cause there is no need for it...but still i supported them by buying the docs subscription...but for what? Some people have it to test...,but we who support this site don't get diddly.. |
So very anxious for this Written by Aly on 2008-06-06 16:54:52 I am very hopeful that there will be good news and a release date soon. Any estimate time frame would be very greatly appreciated. |
Re: joomla1.5 compatible Written by beat on 2008-06-06 11:55:37 juicyfruit, Both CB 1.2 RC+ and paid subscriptions are compatible with: - Joomla 1.0.x (recommended 1.0.15+) - Joomla 1.5.3+ - Mambo 4.5.2+ - Mambo 4.6.4+ natively. So you got a freedom of choice with other criterias, like maturity, speed and features you need. We recommend to use PHP 5.2.3+ and Mysql 5.0+ for new sites. If you are considering joomla, for stability and speed, we recommend 1.0.15+, and for flexibility and future developments 1.5.3+. So it really depends on your site. |
joomla1.5 compatible Written by juicyfruit on 2008-06-02 03:39:50 thanks joomlapolis for working on this component. Just a question. Which joomla version do you recommend running cb 1.2 and the upcoming paid subscription plugin on - joomla 1.5.xx - joomla 1.0. ie. if you were to develop a new site, which one would you use? cheers Ed |
thanks for the update Written by egenes on 2008-05-14 11:26:30 thanks beat... appreciate the update and will continue to wait for this component Cheers |
Written by beat on 2008-06-26 00:57:52 claudeesti, egenes, Some good news: This plugin is far from dead. Bad news is that it has been way more complex to implement than originally scheduled, and we got caught up in development tasks. And I sincerely apologize for the delay. Good news again is that there is a good reason for this delay. This plugin does way more than originally announced and we are working on the presentation materials. There is a beta 7 (yes 7) which will be going to the paid subscriptions test-team within next days, and a few websites are already using previous beta in live tests. I don't want to give any delays publically anymore, but fact is that we are now very well advanced and we are expecting 1-2 more beta before going RC and stable. It should come out not to far after CB 1.2. For latest information on current beta tests, please subscribe to this thread: Current Status thread Regarding design and structure matters, you are right, things got messy with time as we goth caught-up in development of paid subscriptions and CB 1.2, as well as daily forum support. We are currently getting help of a professional designer and communication expert, so things should hopefully change in the next weeks and months. |
I took a look at CB last year and.... Written by claudeesti on 2008-05-09 17:54:19 I was quite please to see that such a component was coming on... but since then... i Guess i shall start looking for something else since the Component to Subscription seems to be Dead... I would Gladly suggest the Designer of the website to start and remodel in a LESS chaotic way their content and new. This web site is a total messed up. You guys my have a WONDERFULL project in your hands but on the design side sorry but it make my eye bleed each time i wan't to search or find a news around here... Clean you thing up and start posting up to date news Even your copyright is not up to date... |
I assume this component is dead in the w Written by egenes on 2008-05-09 12:24:59 Sorry to be so direct, but i assume this component is dead in the water or should i continue to wait for it? I was telling people mid-last year this would be ready soon. Should i just go for a commercially available subscription component that plugs into CB?? Please let all of your patient loyal CB members know what's happening. |
Any News about this? Written by hvus on 2008-04-04 01:05:58 Sorry for been asking.. But I would like to use it.. Could you please let us know the advance or Status? Thank you very much. |
[RELEASE] E.T.A Alpha? Written by chefdaddyo on 2008-03-14 21:37:54 Any sort of E.T.A on said initial Alpha product release? It indeed sounds like a good and useful product. How would one go about getting ones hands on a test/dev release for dev-site testing? I would very much enjoy bug and usability testing said item out and seeing what it entails feature wide as well as bugg-wide. |
I wish to be the tester as well Written by khliew on 2008-02-21 18:26:39 I am looking forward of the release of the application. |
Re: When ? Written by beat on 2008-02-06 11:12:26 It will be released as soon as it's ready. Some test-team members are starting to use it on live sites, so the tests are progressing well. If you want it now and have some spare time to contribute to testing, please check this thread: How to participate to tests. We presently need more testers with time available to test, to get a good test cases coverage, before we can release. So best way to help it getting out faster is to: 1) join the paid subs testteam 2) help out in the joomlapolis forum other joomlapolitans, so we can spend more time developing :) |

JUGA Written by discdemo on 2007-12-29 03:24:26 On the cusp of your release, can someone verify whether or not JUGA falls under the list of compliant ACL extensions? Will the new subscription option integrate with JUGA? Thx. -jz |
cost determined? Written by discdemo on 2007-12-25 16:22:05 Merry Christmas. I know the desire from everyone is to minimize posts until this is ready, but it IS Christmas I just wanted to post, as my present.(please forgive my anxiousness.) Was a cost determined for this yet? Also, how would you stack it up against AEC? Probably fair to say that integration will be less likely to cause heartache down the road, as compared with AEC? Thanks. Sorry for any bother. Enjoy your holiday; I just wanted to get my question out there. -jz |
Merry Christmas ! Written by beat on 2007-12-24 23:31:19 Next news in the next days. 5 items (out of 50 just a month ago) left on the tracker.... Stay tuned... |
Perfection no . . . quality YES! Written by glassparman on 2007-12-19 19:18:01 Beat, man is not perfect therefore nothing man creates is perfect but I'm sure it will be darn close. I'm looking forward to the plugin but you need to have a good holiday first!

Written by beat on 2007-12-19 00:50:00 We have started internal testing, will start beta as soon as the bugs found during these internal testings have been squashed, hopefully in the next days, and still target end of this Year 2007 release. It's silent out here, but we are working really hard to release asap, that's main reason why news are sparse. No coupons for now (i personally am very frustrated each time i see a coupon code asked and don't have one), but we will be proposing an alternative solution to this problem. I hear your comment about "perfect product never coming out", but this one is coming, and it's not going to be perfect, as perfection doesn't exist, but first tests seems to indicate that it will be good. :) Just subscribe to the forum thread mentioned at the end of this blog for news when we open beta tests and release. Next news will hopefully be in the next days. |
Is it Gonna be a 2008 Release? Written by sudeep on 2007-12-18 22:39:36 It has been a long wait and it continues to be so without any visible signs of this much anticipated extension. If the project is gonna run into next year, it would be fair to say it to the anxious and waiting users. Updates on the project status have been far and few in between and extremely terse too. There is no indication of the Price of the component? whether it is annual fee based or a one time fee with free upgrades and so on. I hope and pray that the release doesn't come before people have run out of patience and switched to other products like NPay. The not so distant past, Microsoft Vs Novel Operating system race is a case in point.Microsft released an imperfect windows NT while the Novel Netware guys kept postponing their launch in order to release a perfect product. |
Coupon Codes/Promo Codes Written by mda1125 on 2007-12-18 17:12:31 Maybe I missed it but will this plugin offer the ability to by-pass the payment IF a person has a special promotional code? Let's say I want to offer up 2 plans but if a person purchases product X somewhere else, I'd like to give them a 3 month membership. So instead of them paying for that subscription plan, they could pick it but enter a promo code and it would $0.00 them out and carry on as business as usual. Any option for a such a feature if it's not there already? |
echo Written by discdemo on 2007-12-18 13:32:20 Echo to the last comment. we are all excited, guys...how's it going? we're like a bunch of kids asking if we're there yet,...heh. anxious in cleveland. happy holidays. |

I will pay Written by michaedt on 2007-11-06 21:03:58 Yes, I would pay! I swore that I would not add to this list of pleading. However, I've been following this project for a year with great interest and I'm starting think that its dead in the water. I renewed my support of CB and I would be willing to pay for a simple version of this component (even if it just supported PayPal). How can I help? |

Update Please Written by drstewart on 2007-10-24 07:20:21 Hi Beat, I was wondering if you are able to provide us with a time frame for your next update? Will the next update actually be the release of the product? And as you have already stated are you guys still on target for completion before the end of this year? Thank you for all your hard work and dedication :). |
AEC Gone Written by Joomlageek2.0 on 2007-10-18 18:36:57 I pulled AEC off my subscription site yesterday because of the problems. As one poster said, "It just wasn't cutting it." UGH. I just got a job for another subscription site today and I started looking for a new subscription program here and discovered this thread. It seems like there is a lot of pent up demand. Let me know if I can help. |
Payment Processors Written by Simafor on 2007-10-14 07:44:42 I don't like this "standard" set of payment processors, which are not available to everyone. How difficult it would be to implement some "digital currency" processors such as e-gold.com libertyreserve.com e-bullion.com? Perhaps others...? These are a lot better for International sites and importantly, there never be any issues with credit card fraud and chargebacks, as these payments are irreversible. These would save a LOT of headaches for administrators. Thanks |
Docman Written by beat on 2007-10-02 22:01:09 Yes, there is docman integration using the database, and you should be able to use it as a simple doc buying solution too. |
look forward! Written by moncini on 2007-10-01 19:06:01 i look forward to having it in my site! please Massimo |

Really encouraging :) On my website I have some downloads or resources which users have submitted through DocMan,which people can buy. Was just wondering if I would need a shopping cart extension besides the Paid Subscriptions Plugin (once its ready) Thanks for all the great work ! |
Thanks for your encouragements :) still Written by beat on 2007-09-29 18:02:18 We should see this baby out this year, if that's your question ? :) I hope to write more about it soon. |
OK now, Written by glassparman on 2007-09-18 16:26:16 I'll pay for your date, your dinner, your movie, your six-pack! I just need this plugin! You can even have my wife;) I'll even be a documentation service subscriber! OK, all joking aside. I'm in transition from one ISP to another and would LOVE to open my new site with a subscription script that is not always broken like that something-member script that doesn't like Joomla. |
Oh man... I NEED this! Written by rtgdave on 2007-09-13 04:23:13 AEC just isn't cutting it... I would pay to get ahold of this beta! (seriously... I NEED this :) |

Any Status Reports? Written by uacllc on 2007-08-14 05:16:33 Greetings Beat & the CB Crew! (sounds like a rap group :) Much respect to you all for your diligentm Quality work. Like many who have commented here, I have tried every subscription component on the market, with mixed results. I have been eager these many months and in desperate need of a better option. I know the pressure is high, and I respect you ability to code, moderate and deal with the high expectations. Can you all provide any details on the latest status of the plugin? Best regards, Max |
The CB Team are Brilliant Written by drstewart on 2007-08-12 17:45:34 I'm wishing to compliment the CB development team for their fantastic input to the Joomla community. You guys are proving time after time that you will only release a product of high quality and performance. I'm in the process of re-launching my site with a CB element involved. But I must say that the source of my compliments may also be affected by the desire I have at becoming a tester for the CB Subscription payments extension . I can't wait for this release. THANKS A MILLION GUYS. |
