To make this clear for everyone. After u you updated to 1.0.4 you have to go back in your language file an change the ISO back from utf-8 to iso-8859-1.

That did the trick for me!

Do me a favour an go to www.st-sebastian-beckum.de and click on the green image, which says TOP 50 and vote for the page. Thanks!

I have raised this point with Joomla core team there on the 1.0.4 thread , and they have acknowledged the problem . They are now updating the documentation according to my proposal:

See end of discussion on 1.0.4, here

So your misexperience has gone right to the core Joomla... :)

Hello,
I have same problems with chars.
After upgrading to rc2 which i think is fantastic, i have some strange chars on site. But they are just from user database.
I translated CB language file and chars from that file are rendering corectly.
Chars from database doesn't render corectly only in CB.
I use utf-8

All char encodings need to be in sync....

1) your main language file's _ISO define
2) your editor for editing language files
3) your CB language file

Here the CB language file seems out of sync. Just open in whatever charset it was, and resave in the same charset as defined by the _ISO definition.
