Thanks for hanging with me here...

So, where is the version information on the GroupJive files stored?

Is there another way to confirm that the right files are actually being used, even if the version information isn't being reported as correct?

Version information? The version is stored in the XML file within the description. Am not sure why your installation is failing, but delete all GroupJive directories followed by purging GroupJive database tables. Then please attempt to install; if still having issues on a clean setup then there's some sort of other underlying problem such as a conflict of sorts.

Just to confirm I'm downloading the latest version from the right location - I'm getting the 1.8 RC download from here:

forge.joomlapolis.com/projects/list_files/groupjive

Is that correct?

If so, if you download the com_groupjive_1_8_RC.zip file, open it up and browse to the groupjive.xml file, the version information there states: <version>1.8b5</version>

So where am I going wrong here?

Yes that is the correct release, was just given incorrect version in XML file and can be ignored. 1.8 is no longer being developed; if you'd like to participate in testing of latest development please visit our workgroups here and complete an application.
