Email for Registration / Forgot generates error

7 years 1 month ago #291288 by gjschaller
When I attempt to recover my username on my site, I get the following error after submitting my email address:

Error
Sending Email Failed! Error: SMTP connect() failed. github.com/PHPMailer/PHPMailer/wiki/Troubleshooting

Joomla's email system is working fine, as test emails go through without issue, and Kunena can send alerts - it's just CB that is having the issue.

CB 2.1.2, Joomla 3.6.5. PHP 7.0.15

On further investigation, I am seeing the error for the "Forgot Username / Forgot Password" only - I don't see it on Registration, although I am getting reports that new users can't sign up... I am not receiving the email when I register a test account.

Password Reset Failed! Error: SMTP connect() failed. github.com/PHPMailer/PHPMailer/wiki/Troubleshooting

Host is SiteGround, if that matters.

If I remember, it came down to changing the method Joomla uses to send email. Joomla will fall back to another method by default (which is why it was working for Joomla), but CB was not making the fallback.

Thanks for you reply.
I changed Joomla's email method from SMTP to PHPMail and now it's working..

I wonder if this can be fixed in CB's next release.

Unfortunately PHP mail broke another extension I am using.
So I used gmail SMTP server instead..
Everything works fine now!

Thanks for leading me to the source of the problem.
