cblogin not recognizing users

cblogin not recognizing users was created by JLW
cblogin is saying
Incorrect username or password. Please try again.
to all attempts to log in,
while the core login module accepts them.
The users tables are synchronized.
(Site config cache is off; page cache plugin is off.)
What else can cause this?
I did recently migrate from older Joomla and CB, but the CBlogin module WAS working for several days after the migration. I continued tweaking the site, but can't think what would have caused it to stop working.

mySQL 5.5.37-35.1
BTW, to help diagnose the situation I did enable the Kunena login just to see what it would do. It sent the user to
mydomainname.com/index.php/comprofiler
which generated a 404 error.
