Avatar Image quality loss

Avatar Image quality loss was created by Buzz50
When Avatar images are uploaded they appear to lose their clarity/sharpness

Are images altered when they are re-sized and are there any options for this?

It seems to happen to jpeg images but not png

They're passed through whatever image software you've CB set to use within CB > Configuration > Images. Typically this is GD2 by default. Images will of course lose clarity when they are resized to be smaller. If you're handling a lot of large photo uploads I recommend ensuring you're using ImageMagick instead of GD2.

Thanks,
I don't have ImageMagick as an option, only GD2 or Auto
Is it a server thing?
How can I fix it please?

ImageMagick needs to be setup server side. Contact your host if unsure how. Once setup correctly it should be available to select. As you've provided no examples I've no idea how bad the compression issue is.
