Darned, no it isn't after all.
Is there a problem with RegEx's like the attached?

REGEX seams fine. Does unpublishing that specific auto action allow profile to save? If so what's the rest of the details for that auto action (e.g. global parameters and action parameters)?

I've tried disabling all auto actions with the triggers onAfterUpdateUser, onAfterUserUpdate
It doesn't change.
If I'm logged in as a CB Moderator, then I can save updates, but not as a regular user.

Does unpublishing CB Auto Actions it self resolve the issue? If not then it's not CB Auto Actions causing your issue. It's something else installed. Probably a user store after the profile update user store causing data to be overridden.

Yes, if I disable auto actions completely, it still doesn't save the profile.
I've just updated to the latest CB, no change in behaviour for that.
What is doing the extra 'store'?

Ok, then it's not CB Auto Actions causing it. You'll need to unpublish non-core CB plugins 1 by 1 until the issue resolves. If it doesn't then it's not a CB plugin doing it. You'll then need to disable all Joomla User plugins within Extensions > Plugins except for "User - Joomla!". If still not resolved then repeat with non-core Joomla system plugins. It's most likely something acting on Joomla user store interrupting the process if it's not a CB plugin causing it.
