That is what I am doing now - I have 6 images that begin with 00-, and the others are just names. The six that begin with 00- are not at the beginning, nor are they grouped in any way - they are randomly sorted, it seems.
The ordering is consistent between the frontend and the backend, if that helps.

My guess is the cPanel file manager is automatically sorting them. PHP readdir sorting is entirely based off the filesystem order, which probably isn't alphabetically.
Try "sort" in place of "ksort" as it'll redo the indexes as the display is using a for loop instead of foreach loop, which is why asort doesn't appear to do anything since the indexes remained the same.

I added a bug ticket to change ksort to sort in the core so it'll always be sorted alphabetically regardless of the filesystem sorting.
