How can I increase the resolution of uploaded avatar images. The sizing is set to 200 x 200. If a good resolution image of that size is loaded, the avatar is good. If a larger image of the same resolution is uploaded, the resized profile avatar is very grainy (where I would heave expected cleared due to the compression).
I have tried Image Software: Auto & GD2
Always Resample: Yes & No
Please advise.

Do you have client side resizing enabled in the Avatar field? If not I recommend enabling it so it can use the browser to resize the image. That should give you the best compression you're going to get without resizing before upload otherwise yeah GD2 isn't that great and your other option is to setup ImageMagik on your host.
