I have an email in the display of plans area to send when subscription expires. Some people report getting that 3-4 times. Is there somewhere we can specify that it only goes out once, or control when and how often?

They shouldn't receive it more than once unless you've multiple plans configured with emails and those multiple plans expire at once in which case I recommend using CBSubs Mailer so you can schedule for it to send only 1 email when either of the selected plans expires.
