Below is my testimonial, if you are really having trouble PM me I can try to help you through it, and don't mind doing it for you if this is too hard (though it shouldn't be too difficult to get you through the process);

CB is a fantastic addition to the Joomla! CMS.

For those who are not users, I can say that CB can do a lot more than you might think from the descriptions (and from the statements made by rivals). CB is more than just extra fields for your profiles, it has a vast plugin database of free and commercial add-ons that can quite literally do everything you want with your profiles. There is a vibrant community of people who are willing to invest thier time and effort into coding these free and commercial plugins, and it is not too hard to have a go yourself (I have dabbled with some code myself and find it quite enjoyable). The profiles on my site have user feeds, pokes, interactive games, karma, photo albums, file storage, user information, blog and forum post records, arcade scores, wall feature and are fully customisable in terms of colours and backgrounds. All this can be organised however I see fit (which looks quite ood if you ask me ).

For those who are more experienced; I have tried JomSocial, which is ok, but not nearly as good as CB as it stands, it looks plain and does not do nearly as much, though does have instant update features (ajax) on all its features, which is to its credit, (I shall not be switching over as ajax is being introduced to most CB plugins anyway).

Joomunity was a pain, I couldn't even get it to work.

I am happy to try anything (and will certainly keep my eye on the development of the above and keep trying them on development sites), any suggestions are most welcome. However, CB is what has enabled me to 'blossom' in the Joomla! community area and allows for great amounts of experimentation (and is completely free and open source), and deserves a great deal of respect and admiration. A big thank you to the team from me! I for one would wholeheartedly recomend anyone who fancies 'playing' with Joomla! to have a go with CB and see just how much you can do!

Best wishes to all,

NuMoon

WOW - this post really made my day!

You are most welcome, I was only being honest!

I feel on re-reading that I left out something though... Another community component that I will be keeping my eye on is most definitely CB itself!

The coming 'upgrades' are very exicting news (the ability for plugins to easily create new profile fields, and the HIGHLY desirable privacy plugin for instance). I am very much looking forward to the final 1.2 release and the plugins that are due to be released with it .

One plugin I would suggest though, a user status (built with ajax like the facebook one JomSocial have copied) would be a very attractive core addition .

Feel free to use anything I have said that you like in any way that you feel it is worthy.

Best wishes (and no, thanks to YOU!),

NuMoon

Hi,
I guess that I am more or less trying to do the same thing as what is described here with Joomla:

> 1. user directories
> 2. FTP access to user directory
> 3. sub-domain for each user directory i.e. user.mydomain.com
> 4. custom templates for each user
> 5. e-mail account i.e. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

I also want to do a few other things like allowing users to build there own sub-communities, manage documents etc.

I created a site with Joomla after struggling a bit with templates. I tried many extensions and I now feel that I am stuck.

I am not sure that CB can answer my needs either. I tried to install it and did not see much new features.

Any advice would be quite welcome.

Thank you

Pasx

Just an update on this, there is a plugin... check out downloads.srilankeeya.com/ . I got it working on my RC4 1.5.9 site with no trouble!

Some of this can be done with myjspaces component. It allows for users to have their own webpages on your site (combine it with fck editor and it is great!).. It also gives each user a folder linked to their webpages to upload docs to. doesn't do a subdomain, but does create a folder under the name of the webpage in the root withh an inndex file that draws the webpage up (so the address is www.YOIURSITE.COM/THEIRWEBPAGENAME) which is pretty cool.. Would get you some of the way there at least (perhaps).

Their is a custom template add in as well, but i forget thhe name (didn't like it, prefer to have the control of the site template as admin ). Do you mean they could customise the template themselves or to select predefined customised templates thhough (the above does the latter)?

Best,

NuMoon
