plan assignment fails

plan assignment fails was created by mutantvw
After 3 weeks of google and forum searching I am completely stuck.
Not sure if its a Joomla version problem or CB problem
Joomla 2.5.6
Cb 1.8.1
The problem
Plan 1
Plan 2
etc
customer chooses plan 1 and completes registration
I would expect him then to be assigned to plan 1 with the access rights associated with that plan
this does not happen, instead he remains as a registered user
Maybe someone can shed some light on this problem please as I just don't know where to try next
