controlling access to sub-sites was created by ksnieder
I have several sub-sites that I want the front pages to be visible to visitors but everything else to require a subscription from the main site. Is their a way to do this?

You could use the folder access plugin to htaccess protect directories, you could protect your other sites directories and that would cause users to need a subscription to gain access. Folder access can work from your joomla root or from your webroot.

But wouldn't that make the subsite front pages require registration as well. For example, for subsite, www.mysite.com/houston/ I need the front page to be visible to the public and everything else from that subsite joomla install to be visible only to members. Suggestions?

Put joomla in a subfolder inside that folder is about all I can suggest or use the same database for all your joomla installs and let cbsubs restrict the locations you wish to restrict on your other site.

Why not just have sections of one big site with directory and index.html redirects to the 'houston' section...? That's what I'd do.
