We have set this up in our Joomla so long ago, that I didn't remember that setting and had to look it up!

We are using PHP Mail, but I guess we could have used SMTP or sendmail fine as well.

We have our own e-mail servers and redundant high-availability hosting infrastructure , as sending mails reliably requires a solid setup that a lot of hosters don't do right, leading typically to formatting and deliverability issues.
