Is there anyway to control article access without installing / using CB Subs?

I am not looking to make money from subscriptions but would like to restrict access to 3 different groups of registered users.

I searched "article access" but couldn't find anything... except CB Subs...

Not that I am aware. Only other known 3rd party extensions that handle such limitations hack core code, which we don't support nor will advise. CBSubs is the only or rather best course of action for article access controls (or wait for J1.6 so you can create custom usergroups?).
