Is there a high-level way to alter the links that show on the user profile page? Or, do I need to modify PHP somewhere? What I want is to show a link for "Update Profile" only, without links to "About Community Builder" and "Update Your Image."

How to get rid of "About Community Builder" is described in the CB documentation you can download here (page 85 (review the first Note displayed) <-- search helped).
I am not aware of a way to get rid of "Update your image" without editing core files, though.
