call CB API from within plugin

call CB API from within plugin was created by kommid
Hi,
I'm trying to call the CB api from within a plugin. I followed the instructions at www.joomlapolis.com/documentation/279-community-builder/tutorials/18357-including-cb-api-for-usage-outside-of-cb but all I get is "Error: Failed to start application: Failed to start application"
Then I noticed that the tutorial is from 2013 or 2016.
Have there been changes on the way the CB api is properly included into non-cb files as authentication plugins or custom components?

The tutorial is still accurate. What API are you trying to call? We don't have a "Failed to start application" error. That's thrown by Joomla when Joomla fails to start. My guess is you're incorrectly accessing your plugin.
