What is the best method to simplify the editor was created by dfirsching
For text areas in CB profiles, what is the best way to simplify the editor that is used, for registered users (not authors and above)?

Simplify what editor? The editor used for textarea editor fields? Best approach is to use JCE which allows custom editor on a usergroup by usergroup basis allowing you to remove buttons/features for certain groups as necessary.

Would the group to be used be the site's default, since new users would be (becoming) Registered? I had thought that JCE would cover groups ABOVE Registered, which don't normally get editing privileges (and can't select their editor).

JCE can control editor display based on usergroup so you could have a specific display for Registered, Author, and Editor users if you wanted.
