Ensure your substitution is completely lowercase, we've discovered some substitutions appear to be case sensitive. Ensure when providing the fieldname that it's EXACT as to what is seen in field management.

I have this problem also since upgrading from 1.4 to 1.7. I didn't check all of the field types but the Drop Down (Single Select) and Drop Down (Single Select) do not work (only the placeholder is displayed). Text fields and radio buttons do work. It wold be great to have this working like 1.4.

I added a few extra fields to the administrator new user notification email language file and found the same issues.

Was able to confirm your issue and have made a bug ticket for further investigation. Please use the more complex substitution display as seen below for the time being.

[cb:userfield field="FIELD_NAME" /] OR [cb:userdata field="FIELD_NAME" /]

Tried it. I got blank return for userfield and "Array" for userdata.

I see, unfortunately there is a bug within the substitution processing function introduced with 1.7. :( Will be reviewing to provide a potential fix.

I've added a patch that is tested and confirmed to resolve the issue. Please review the forge for the patch if experienced in patching installs. Otherwise please view the patch and make the changes manually (do not copy and paste). Please note the patch is not finalized and could be changed before next release.
