I was wondering if there was a way to make the connection list more like the userLists that can be created in CB? Also I was wondering if there was a module that I could put on a User Home Page that would notifiy them that they have a pending connection?

As far as the second part of your question - both the login module and the workflows module (distributed with CB) do exaclty that (notify the user of a pending connection).
