Best program I've come across -- and its a commercial component -- is Ajax Chat by fijiwebdesign. The integration is tight and it looks sexy -- it offers some instant messaging features, but mainly its a chatroom...

Going to do a full review of it shortly. It's an awesome piece of work.

Not sure what you mean by 'Instant Messaging' in this context.
There is a CB plugin that notes a variety of IM IDs.
There is also an MSN login module (which I have placed on members CB Profile Page, as I think that it complements the plugin.
There are also a variety of non-CB chat systems available for Joomla.

Moved from Joomla to Drupal

An example of a great concept is www.PlentofFish.com where they let you contact an online user with a popup instant messaging system.

I currently use uddeim for private messages, but they are more like an email.

Instant message is like a private chat room that pops up with JUST the user and the one being contacted.

Anyone know of a system like that?

Instant Messaging is different from chatting.

Chatting in a chat room and the ability to send a private message is great. Most chat components do that.

What Instant Messaging would be, by my definition, is when you see a user listed in the Who's Online CB module, you could create a popup live chat box for that member directly. THey have the choice to accept or decline.

www.PlentyofFish.com has this feature. I believe on the profile, there is a link that appears when a member is online.

At that point, you can instigate the popup private, one on one chat box.

MSN, AOL, YAHOO all those require separate memberships. The example at plenty of fish DOES NOT.

DOes that help clarify the purpose for this topic? ANy ideas?
