Is there a way to alphabetize(based on fieldtitle) a dropdown list in the back end with a php/sql query ?

I don't know if a solution to this was ever found?

I have been searching for a way to search users alphabetically, i.e: a module containing the alphabet which, when one letter is selected will return all users who's name begins with that letter, but I cannot find out how or what to place in the list management to return this query?

Any help or pointers in the right direction would be gratefully appreciated
