As a clue for those components or modules that could be writing in jos_user, here is some that could be suspected :
- Contact XTD
- loud mouth
- people book
- SMF bridge

Could Joomlaboard be causing it too? Once I deleted avatars in _users , the portrait worked again, but I can't update my joomlaboard avatar anymore.

Not a big issue just hoping to add to the knowledge base.

FYI: I also have smo shoutbox installed
