I'm now starting to learn php and I have decided to make a modification to Nant's Gallery as a learning project and I was hoping someone could give me some pointers.

What I want to do is make the uploaded files searchable from a new component. They could be searched by file type, username, userlocation and usergroup (from GroupJive).

Would the best way to do this be adding additional fields to the jos_comprofiler_plug_profilegallery table and pulling the info in from other tables and then getting the component to search that table? Just want to know if I'm on the right track or miles off!
