Hello again, I was able to get the photo to upload. However, I get the "broken" img symbol in the location where the avatar should be. Could you tell me what file to check?

Have seen this when uploading corrupted jpg files.
The corruption does not effect the original image but does cause the GD library to fail.
Try opening and saving the original image with one of your local applications - then upload the resulting image - see if this helps.
