Well it seems that Mikko the creator and dungeon master of the Advanced Profile Control Component has gone awol and those that have paid 35 euros for his component are left stranded and without any support. He has hard coded into it a security feature that he and he alone needs to activate to enable the component to be used, or moved. Great thought if you are committed to following through and always being there to get the job done......
So, it seems that this feature is one that has alot of requests and can be solved and instigated as Mikko has previously done it. It would be great to have this built into Community Builder, or at least on offer as a paid component from a team of developers that can offer some level of support, or at the very least not built a stupid security code into it to render it useless.
I have an urgent need to create several different registration forms that automatically put that user into a specific group upon registration. Any suggestions?

I've been hoping for multiple user types and the accompanying custom registration forms for a long time.

I've considered working on my own hack or plugin but won't attempt it until winter (when golf season is over haha).

The upcoming Subscription plugin sounds like what you are waiting for.

As far as a custom registration page, a lot of things are easier to do in 1.2.
