Well, based on other posts I've read, it seems that it is just best to download 1.2RC2 and try it. So I am now a paid Doc Subscriber.

Hopefully this will add to your ability to get the docs updated with a simple field plugin example.

In the meantime, if anyone has any pointers on where to start with developing a field plugin, then please let me know.

I can only second this - an example of a field plugin would me most helpful.
