This is a great step forward for Joomla.

Question though - does this product allow the set up of custom ACL groupings?

I currently use AEC and JACLPlus for my subscription sites. Frankly, I hate it, so I am more than open to using the CB solution.

However, the Joomla's user permissions are too limited. If I need four different levels of access, then I can't have users who are just members set to 'Publisher' in order to get them a different access level. I use JACLPlus for that, but it is a hack and I don't want to use it anymore if I can avoid it.

I've been scouring the published material, but I don't see anything about custom ACL groups. Can you elaborate on it?

CB Subs does not hack the core Joomla ACL, nor does it create custom ones. However, the control offered by the plugins allows you to emulate user groups. For examples, check out the CBSubs Integrations tab , specifically the Fields and Fields/Tabs Integration Plugins. There are a lot more ways to control things on your site, so scan through all of them.

is there a demo of this compent that is set to 2-3 users that we will be able to test on my site to see how it will act to see what problems i will encounter

There is no demo except here on Joomlapolis to pay for Documentation Subscriptions, MyCommunity template or CBSubs, but you can view the JoomlaDay video article that will give you an idea of what's included.
