my host has changed and chmoded the Session save path to point to /tmp. The installer still reads unwriteable.

Hosters can enable a "SafeMode" for PHP, which disallows file creation by PHP, among other things.
You can check this under System status in backend.
- You either have your host enable safe-mode (recommended), or - Wait for joomla 1.5 (including an official FTP installer) - Apply SafeMode patch to joomla 1.0.x: http://developer.joomla.org/sf/sfmain/do/viewProject/projects.safejoomla (no guarrantees), which will do the file creations using FTP !
Please not that CB can be installed using this patch, but that it does not apply to CB-plugins installation. thanks for reply.
my host said he doesn't want safemode=off for security reasons.
Maybe i'll try this patch. Later, now I have "installed" CB dumping the db from my local server on the public one. Hope everything 'll work...
But do you think other functionality of CB/joomla is going to be reduced with safe mode ON?

Well, safeMode has a good marketing name, but that's almost all about it...
Yes, there are couple of things which are reduced in the backend mainly: - media manager - installing CB plugins - and a few others. I chose my hosters to allow safeMode, so maybe somebody can reply better than me
I've still a hope to make the FTP installer of Joomla! 1.5 work for CB-plugins, with the corrections/changes we are doing in Joomla! 1.5 with the core devs. More on this subject later this week. I ran into this today because my group was set in a way that Apache could not write to the path. After changing ownership to the group that apache belongs to, it worked fine.
chown group:user /path 1 4M N0T 4 G33K! 1 4M N0T 4 G33K! 1 4M N0T 4 G33K! -- 0K 1 4M
