Categories V Groups

Categories V Groups was created by rnomis
I am totaly confused after installing CB and GroupJive. I have been trying to get my head round it and still can't understand the distinction between Categories and Groups.

What I am trying to do:
I want to use GroupJive to help with documentation access.
I have 5 groups of people who will need access. Only the 3 top level groups will be able to upload documents. One top level group will have access to all documents but will need two sections for their documents. Those specifically designated for them and a section for the rest of the documents (this is just to make it easier for this group to sort their documents). Two other groups will only be able to access certain documents and not upload at all - they shouldn't even see an upload button.

Do I need to create a category for the organisation and then Groups for each user group or have I got it completely wrong?

GroupJive isn't designed to be a documentation manager. It's designed for social interaction; such as the same experiences you find with Groups on Facebook. For what you're wanting you may want to look into using DOCman.

A group must be within a category. Categories are containers of groups. Example as follows.

Category 001
- Group 001
- Group 002

OK, becoming clearer now.
So, if I had a work related site, I could have a Category: Computer Experts, with Groups: PHP, ASP and VBA
And another Category: Bosses, with Groups: Directors, Managers and Chairmen.

The groups within the Computer category could interact with each other but couldn't see groups in the Bosses category and viceversa unless I set permissions for them to see other categories?

Yup, if that's what you wanted.

Groups don't interact with other groups. Users within groups interact with one another. Who sees what is purely dependent on how you've the access configured.
