Er...well, I'm not particularly interested in 'uninstalling without leaving any data' - I'm interested in upgrading to the 1.8 RC version. If I need to uninstall along the way to get there, that's fine...
And, doesn't seem to be the case that I should have to remove database tables in order to upgrade to the latest version also if that's what you're suggesting.
You don't have to uninstall anything. Just install it and it'll install upgrade your previous released GroupJive.

I had originally just tried to install the 1.8 RC over my existing GroupJive install, but that didn't work which is why I tried uninstalling it first.
I just tried installing 1.8 RC on my system and get the following error:
Component Install: Another Component is already using directory: "/var/www/vhosts/mysite.org/httpdocs/components/com_groupjive"
Component Install: Another Component is already using directory: "/var/www/vhosts/mysite.org/httpdocs/administrator/components/com_groupjive"
Do I need to remove menu/module items that are using GroupJive references?
I can't advise you on installation procedure because you'd installed numerous times. Not sure how to advise you to proceed. I recommend completely removing GroupJive (uninstall from Joomla backend) then re-install. If you continue to receive that error then please navigate to that directory after uninstall and remove those directories then attempt to re-install.

Yep - unfortunately that's exactly what I've tried.
The previous re-install process involved me deleting via FTP the com_groupjive directories in 'components' and 'administrator/com_groupjive' after uninstalling GroupJive from the Joomla backend.
Are there other directories/files I missed?
Or, are there other ways of checking to make sure I've got the right files installed there? Where does the version information get stored?
Those are the only two directories involved other then images/, which is a non-conflicting directory involved in the installation.
