FAQ articles address this issue (guess very few actually read them ...).

You are referring to this:

When I try to install RC2 I get the following message in the Joomla/Mambo backend component installer:

ERROR: Could not find an XML setup file in the package.

Answer:

You need to decompress the original distribution file which contains the component installable zip and various supporting module zip files.

Please download and read the documentation!

Ok, let me explain again,

firstly, this is not RC2 or any main release of CB with zip files within a zip
secondly, there is nothing wrong with the zip? why? I installed the same (exact) zip on 1.0+ version of Joomla
thirdly, I checked permissions on all folders via the help in Joomla (my version is the latest 1.5.22)
fourthly, I checked ownership of the folders in question, just in case that could be an issue

I did read the forum, I spent 4hrs reading everything I could find and I read the FAQ already. I have been using CB since 2006 I believe, just purchased the $100 option on it - I know things can be frustrating when they get asking so many time and 99% of the time, people just don't read. Just be careful you don't use a tone that makes customers feel jaded (not saying I do).

So with that, any ideas, if it is not the zip or the permissions on those folders, where would you look next?

exact error:

Upload showPlugins - Upload Failed
ERROR: Could not find an XML setup file in the package.
[ Continue ... ]

Upload showPlugins - Failed
Installation file not found:
/var/www/vhosts/....../httpdocs/tmp/install_4d65eb38256f6/
[ Continue ... ]

PS - just downloaded again (on a pc) to avoid any mac issues and tried, no success. And yes, I know it is a CB plugin not to be installed in the joomla plugin section in fact I never tried to do that.

@oates:

got you PM - there is something wrong with your entire installation.

I do not believe that CB has been properly installed.

Also it looks like you have many user database issues - just look at CB tools -> User database check.

When trying to reinstall CB I get a failure on second step, so I assume CB has not been properly installed.

Perhaps you did a migration?

Yes, I remember during the initial upgrade from 1.2 to 1.4 CB it failed and gave a message saying a certain file is still present...etc.

I manually removed that file and then it seemed ok and showed 1.4

what I have done now is, remove all CB components and modules and started over.

Upon install of comprofiler I get:

Error while opening {/var/www/vhosts/.../httpdocs/tmp/install_4d67fb11981d7/index.html} in write binary mode
Installer - Error

Uncompressing /var/www/vhosts/.../httpdocs/administrator/components/com_comprofiler/pluginsfiles.tgz failed.
[ Continue ... ]

on the next screen:

Warning: file /var/www/vhosts/.../httpdocs/administrator/components/com_comprofiler/pluginsfiles.tgz still exists. This is probably due to the fact that first installation step did not complete, or second installation step did not take place. If you are sure that first step has been performed, you need to execute second installation step before using CB. You can do this now by clicking here: please click here to continue next and last installation step.

Clickin on the next step doesn't fix it, if I manually remove pluginsfiles.tgz the error will go away but I guess that's what affected the plugin issue to begin with.

Thank you again. Hopefully if I can install from scratch successfully the plugin issue will clear up too.

update:

completely uninstalled CB,

tried fresh install - no success,

then tried this:

- if you see a warning like:

"Warning: file 'components/com_comprofiler/pluginsfiles.tgz' still
exists.
This is probably due to the fact that first installation step did not
complete, or second installation step did not take place. If you are
sure that first step has been performed, you need to execute second
installation step before using CB. You can do this now by clicking here:
(link: please click here to continue next and last installation step)."

Then you can just click on the link to complete the second step.
This step simply uncompresses that 'pluginsfiles.tgz' file into the
same place and then deletes the file. The second step can be safely
redone.

In case it still doesn't work, it's probably a permissions problem
either on the folder 'components/com_comprofiler', not allowing the
webserver to write into (or in case of joomla 1.5 ftp installer active,
the credentials not being correct).

You can fix that by fixing the permissions of that folder,
and retry step 2.

At last resort you can uncompress pluginsfiles.tgz, and rename the
resulting directory 'pluginsfiles' to 'plugin' at the same place.
You need to make sure that the plugin and all directories inside
plugin (user, templates, language) are also writable, otherwise you
won't be able to install CB plugins at a later stage.

Uncompressed etc. no dice.

I assume step 1 of install isn't fully working, as I can uncompress/upload/chmod these folders okay.

Strange - can the DB factor in the situation.
The only thing I have done to DB was delete 1000's of russian accounts, I assume this was due to leaving it on CB1.2 for a year or more (didn't realise). If the DB doesn't factor in to the install situation, then I am stuck at this point- after trying a fresh install and the steps above.
