This is the EXACT problem I am having. New registered user get messages 'invalid username or password'. Changing password in CB admin doesn't fix it, only changing password in core Joomla User Manager fixes problem so users can login.

Looks like the problem is with Joomla itself.

Teurteul in another thread pointed me to the fix, thought I would share it here.

Edit the file plugins/user/joomla/joomla.php

search for if ($userPluginParams->get('strong_passwords') == 1)
replace with if ($userPluginParams->get('strong_passwords', 1) == 1)

Modified the file on my site and it appears to have fixed the problem. Registered a new user, and was able to log in without any issues.

Seems the solution is to go to cb login module. select the strong password as disabled, save, then set strong password as enabled and save again. Ever since working like clock work. Seems the module is sitting as enabled for strong password in the back end but is actually not enabled

I had the same problem that users couldn't change their password and got the same errortext.

I have changed the joomla.php file like discribed and the problem is solved.
