Problem resolved. Apparently the folder permission had to be set to 777.

I found that changing all the folders from the root:
images/
images/comprofiler/
images/comprofiler/gallery/ to 777 allowed me to upload my pic.

Probably there are folder owner problems. You can solve it connecting by FTP and creating the folders structure again (with new owner) and writing permissions
