Using groupjive in iframe

Using groupjive in iframe was created by cleblond
I have some custom jumi php pages that I wanted to show a stripped down version of groupjive group page, dynamically calling different groups. First problem I had was the links needed to have tmpl=component appended to them. I replaced the $vars line in cbgroupjive.class.php with the following and it did the trick. Of course you need to have tmpl=component in the url in iframe. Is there a cleaner way to include the component in my code? Maybe I should just remove the panes instead?
//replace line
$vars =	$action . $function . $category . $group . $id;

///with these lines
$tmpl = "";

if (JRequest::getString("tmpl")) {

$tmpl = "&tmpl=component";

}

$vars =	$action . $function . $category . $group . $id . $tmpl;

Can't advise you on core edits. GJ comes with plenty of API. Please review the template files to see how just the main template file is rendered for example.
