I dont know if i am asking this at right place.

I am making a site for student community, but it will be open to other public too. I want to distinguish between public and enrolled student in my university. One way to differentiate is to ask them to register with their institutional email id and get verified by sending activation link, at the same time i want to give them freedom of using another email id.

i was thinking how to do this. I want to differentiate between public and institutional member cause i dont want public to be able to post blog in frontpage and restrict them for certain forum. I guess i can do this by separating them into different user group like register and special sort of... I thought if someone can offer me some better r easier solution for it ?
