I'm running Joomla 1.0.9 and Community Builder 1.0 Stable. I tried it (using div display style) on one of my other sites and there it worked. As far as I can see it now, the only difference is that the sites where it works use tables in the sites templates. But I'm not sure if this can be the reason, I will check for that on a completely new test-install and report later...
