See it in action on demo sites.

It allows people to edit text fields in frontend mode - directly inline without selecting the edit profile menu item.

I have installed and published this plugin.

I don't see any difference on frontend user profiles. Cannot find anywhere to configure it. No text boxes are editable on users profile (apart from in Edit Profile as before).

Nothing in the main user manual about it.

Could you explain exactly what difference I am supposed to see?

It doesn't convert all text fields to ajax. Please navigate to Field Management and create a new field of the Ajax Text type.
