I have Joomla 1.6.1 and CB Subs 1.1.2

I have 2 plans - free and paid

I've set up user groups in Joomla as follows:

Public
- Registered
- - Paid
- - - Free

And have told CB Subs which group to assign each new subscription to (ie to put the free members in 'free' and the paid members in 'paid'). This is because I want to have certain tabs only available to paid members.

However, if I register a new user, whether they be a free or a paid subscription, they are just put into the group called 'Registered'.

Am I missing something obvious here?

So should I upgrade Joomla first?
Will CB (1.4) and CB Subs (1.1.2) work OK on my udated Joomla 1.7 site so that I can then update them to the latest versions?
