Well, yeah, I think you are indeed missing something. Auto-login is usually realized by cookies, not based on IP address. :)

Then all you need to do is mark the checkbox in the login module parameters of 1.2 to remember login and then the user can't have cookies disabled. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
