Hey thanks. I'm not a coder or anything. But when I start building a site or get an idea of how i want something to work I stick at it and don't sleep until I figure it out. This one i wanted BAD.

CB/Joomla golf site: www.thegolfspace.com
Geek/joomla site: www.tkserver.com

Check out my Joomla/CB projects:

* LIKE thumbs up system for "liking" content items
* Karma - CB user rating system
* Golf Score Tracker
* Jitter - status update system. "What's on your mind?"
* CB Author Plug - Shows CB author link and avatar in content items. J1.5 compatible and very customizable!

Found on my web site or in the Joomlapolis Directory !

Bugger!

I never thought of usernames with spaces in them. :(

Is there any way to prevent people from registering new accounts with usernames that include spaces?

I've typed the usernames into their urls on my site and it automatically puts a % in the space and it works. but I'm not sure if that would work on all systems...

It's not a big deal. Anyone who has a name with spaces in it on the internet usually doesn't think about compadibility. some places won't even let you register with a space. So i'm going to offer my members the option of changing their name to a dash if they wish.

I'm on winxp and my server is Red Hat with apache - works awesome

About 50% of the users on my site have registered usernames with spaces in them.

At the moment they have crap url's and I'd rather they didn't.

Just because people don't think about these things at the time doesn't mean that it's not something they would want later.

I guess this is why My Space lets you pick your own url after you register.

The best way to deal with this would be to stop it at the source. I would like it if the registration script forced you to use a username with no spaces. It already suggests that you do but doesn't enforce it.

I'm going to offer the users the ability email an admin and we will htaccess redirect variation of their user name to their domain.

Now i have to figure out if i'm going to redirect to a dash or an underscore.

This is going to get very complicated when I split the site to a loadsharing system.

I'm going to play around with this same trick and see if i can get the CB groups to redirect. www.mydomain.com/ListA www.mydomain.com/ListB etc

Excuse me while i get a drink and some asprin.

Hehe. My new site is just getting going so I'd like to avoid this problem. How can we force users to have no spaces in their name?

Make a point and leave it at that. Set up a little thinger in there liek a box image that tells them:

Warning inserting a space in your name makes you a dickhead, and no one will like you and also your profile wont work right and you will have to re-register to use this site correctly.

Dont be a dickhead.

Thats my advanced coding solution for this issue.
