Thanks for the detailed response Kyle.
I have CBAntiSpam enabled, however can't see any captcha in place. Is it Invisible reCAPTCHA? How do I check to see one protecting on the sign up process?

You need to configure the captcha within CB AntiSpam > Captcha then be sure the antispam_captcha field in CB > Field Management is configured to display on registration.
