[SOLVED] Spam registrations

[SOLVED] Spam registrations was created by agouldtdc
I have been noticing some spam registrations recently. We use CB (1.9) with required fields and CB Captcha enabled. The site is still Joomla! 1.5.26.

SMF forum is enabled on the site with registration in SMF disabled. Joomla registration is disabled.

Has anyone any idea how this might be happening? Should I enable any other CB features to promote security?

TIA

Andrew

PS Migration to J 3.2 is imminent

CB Captcha is deprecated. I recommend upgraded to CB AntiSpam. CB AntiSpam provides 3 forms of captcha and other spam prevention techniques such as duplicate logins, registrations, failed attempts limit, etc..

Please note that there isn't much you can do against human spammers as they're able to Captcha needs. CB AntiSpam however can at least block their IP Address, which can prove useful against some spammers.

Thanks Kyle I shall do that.

What I do not understand is how they can register without completing the required fields.

If they have no profile data except core Joomla data then they likely registered using Joomla registration. Ensure Joomla registration is disabled or CB Core Redirect is installed to prevent access to Joomla user component pages.

mod_login is disabled. I will install CB Core Redirect.

Thanks for the advice.

You have to go to Users > User Manager > Options then set "Allow User Registration" to "No" to shut off Joomla registration. You'd then need to ensure within CB > Configuration > Registration that CB registration is set to be independent from Joomlas. CB Core Redirect of course will also auto protect from accessing Joomlas user component though.
