Is there a way I can default items on the query check box (multiple) to be selected?

For initial registration display, yes. You'll need to edit the field and specify "Default Registration Value" the same way it'd be stored, which is as follows.
VALUE_1|*|VALUE_2|*|VALUE_3
Separate multiple values with |*|. However if you're using CB Conditional and you condition the field to initially be hidden then the value selection will be lost as CB Conditional resets a fields value on hide.
