Customizing the User Management Dashboard

How do I customize what fields are shown in the User Management dashboard. For example, I want first and last name up there as separate fields:

You can't without modifying the core XML files, which will result in your changes being lost on upgrade of CB, or creating a new CB plugin that extends the XML view like CBSubs has done with its Subscriptions column.
