I was under the impression that the field populates as soon as someone applies (not pays). So it wouldn't matter if they upgrade at point of payment (I don't even think they can do that anyways).
The conditions you're using will only populate the field once the subscription has become active (paid) and only for new subscriptions (not upgrades or renewals).

Oh I guess I am confused because I saw it populate for people who didn't even get approved (but they had free memberships). So it would be "active" upon application, not payment or approval.
A free membership is active immediately as there is no payment to process. In both cases admin user approval is irrelevant as it's not checking for that, but checking that the subscription it self has become active.

We used your advice and made those changes. So far so good. I will keep an eye out for any weird users that come through and try and "upgrade" at point of approval/payment.
