It doesn't show anything unless it has a notification to show. So for example if you have registration approval or image upload approval enabled it'll display links there to the approval pages. If connections and private message notifications are on in the module it will also show when you've a pending connection request or a unread private message. You can use the pre-text and post-text parameters to show substitution supported custom HTML content in the module as well.
