Please check that you are not subscribed to the top level category. Review the following links and click the unsubscribe button (check top and bottom of page!) if any.

The thread you linked I can see the subscribe/unsubscribe perfectly fine. It's possible this is a Kunena bug and have brought it to their attention.

Ok, that helped -- apparently I was subscribed to the Usage group and was able to unsubscribe at the top level. I would never have figured that out on my own. And also, just for your troubleshooting information, that Usage group didn't show up on my list of subscriptions on the Forum tab in my user profile.
