We tried this and it just showed the content without any security at all.

The content needs to be protected by CBSubs using CBSubs Content integration. Next create a menu item to it with Registered access. You can also try setting the content it self to Registered. Menu protection is entirely dependent on the Itemid so it may not work with Menu Alias usage and I highly recommend using something more strict like By URL Part. You'd then just share the URL or try linking to it with Menu Alias usage or External URL usage.
