Does the mass mailer within CB > User Management work? Find it strange that would work, but none of the other emails do; are you sure you didn't just test Joomlas mass mailer? Have you tried using PHP Mailer instead of SMTP to let your hosts mail server see if it can send the emails? Have you tried the trick suggested above to add the port to the host in your mailer settings in Joomla?
